New Year’s Day (元旦 Yuándàn) marks the start of the solar calendar year. In Chinese, “元” means “beginning” and “旦” means “daybreak”. Unlike the Chinese New Year (春节 Chūnjié), New Year’s Day celebrates the arrival of a brand-new year in the Gregorian calendar.
As 2025 draws near, have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions (新年计划 Xīnnián Jìhuà)?
Many people use this time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the coming year. In China, New Year’s Eve (跨年夜 Kuànián Yè) is celebrated with grand festivities—cities host New Year’s Eve galas (跨年晚会 Kuànián Wǎnhuì), spectacular light shows (灯光秀 Dēngguāng Xiù), and countdown (倒计时 Dàojìshí) events. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with family or counting down with friends, celebrating New Year’s Eve (跨年 Kuànián) is all about embracing the future with joy and hope!
