This is a comprehensive guide to the Listening section of the HSK Level 2 exam, designed for learners who have mastered around 300 common Chinese words and basic grammar.

Test Structure:

Total Duration: 55 minutes

1. 5 minutes for personal information

2. 25 minutes for listening (35 questions)

3. 22 minutes for reading (25 questions)

4. 3 minutes for filling in the answer sheet

All questions include pinyin and each recording is played twice.

Listening Section Breakdown

Part 1: True or False (Questions 1–10)

1. Listen to a sentence and judge if it matches a picture.

2. Mark "√" if true, "×" if false.

3. Skills:

1) Preview images and anticipate vocabulary.

2) Focus on key nouns and verbs and avoid mistakes caused by phrases with similar meanings. Eg,“挂钟(clock)"is different from“手表(watch)”.Also,“骑车(ride a bike) is absolutely different from“开车(drive a car)”.

Part 2: Listen and Choose the Picture (Questions 11–20)

1. Match short dialogues with the correct image.

2. Each conversation includes only two sentences.

3. Skills:

1) Scan all images quickly.

2) Predict likely conversations.

3) Identify core details like objects, actions, and numbers.

Part 3: Listen and Choose the Answer (Questions 21–30)

1. Listen to the sentences and answer the questions. Sentences in this part will be given in the form of conversations between a male speaker and a female speaker. 

2. Skills:

1) Preview answer choices and predict the questions.

2) Take notes.

3) Pay close attention to key information.

Part 4: Listen to Long Dialogues (Questions 31–35)

1. Listen to slightly longer conversations and answer multiple-choice questions.

2. Skills:

Focus on important sentences or keywords to grasp the overall meaning.

 Practical Tips

1. Understand daily life vocabulary, gestures, and cultural context.

2. Practice predicting answers before listening.

3. Develop note-taking strategies during the exam.
