It’s almost the end of 2023 now. I would like to talk about 5 popular words in China in this year.

1. 双向奔赴(shuāngxiàngbēnfù) 

It means run to each other. This refers to both parties working together towards a common goal and getting closer to each other. 

Zhēnzhèng de àiqíng yīnggāi shì shuāngxiàng bēnfù de.

真正的爱情应该是双向奔赴的。

True love should be both sides love each other. 

2. 显眼包(xiǎnyǎnbāo)

It refers to someone whose outward appearance or personal character is eye-catching. Originally, this word more or less with a little "dislike" meaning. However, right now the meaning of "dislike" has gradually dissolved. Calling someone a "显眼包(xiǎnyǎnbāo)" is not only because he or she appears to be "eye-catching" , but also because the person is cute and interesting, and able to create a joyful atmosphere among people.

Tā dìngzuò le yí tào fěnhóngsè de xīzhuāng, zhǔnbèi bìyè diǎnlǐ de shíhou chuān qù zuò xiǎnyǎnbāo.

他定做了一套粉红色的西装，准备毕业典礼的时候穿去做显眼包。

He customized a pink suit and prepared to wear it and become the most eye-catching boy for the graduation ceremony.

3. 搭子(dāzi)

This word originally referred to "people who play mahjong or poker cards together". Now 搭子(dāzi) is kind of like a partner you can do a specific thing together. It is "lighter than a friend, heavier than a colleague". 

So for example, people who can have lunch 吃饭(chīfàn) together with you everyday will be your 饭搭子(fàndāzi). People who can exercise together with you will be your 运动搭子(yùndòngdāzi). People who can travel together with you will be your 旅行搭子(lǚxíngdāzi). 

4. 情绪价值(qíngxùjiàzhí)

It can be translated as emotional value. It is a description of interpersonal relationships, referring to a person's ability to influence the emotions of others. The more comfortable, joyful, and stable emotions a person brings to others, the higher their emotional value 情绪价值(qíngxùjiàzhí)高(gāo); On the contrary, his emotional value is lower 情绪价值(qíngxùjiàzhí)低(dī). 

Xiàndài nǚshēng zhǎo nánpéngyou bú zàihū tā yǒuméiyǒu qián, gèng zàihū tā néng tígōng duōshǎo qíngxù jiàzhí.

现代女生找男朋友不在乎他有没有钱，更在乎他能提供多少情绪价值。

Modern girls don't care if they have money when looking for a boyfriend, but rather how much positive emotional value they can provide.

5. 质疑(zhìyí)……，理解(lǐjiě)……，成为(chéngwéi)……

Questioning…, understanding…, becoming…

For example, you did not understand your parents when you were a child and even questioned or challenged their opinion; as you grow older, you gradually understand them; and when you have a child, you will do just as your parents did back in the day. 

Zhìyí fùmǔ, lǐjiě fùmǔ, chéngwéi fùmǔ.

质疑父母，理解父母，成为父母. 

Question your parents, understand your parents, become a parent.

For me, I wasn’t a good student when I was a kid. I don’t understand why the teachers gave us so many homework. As I grows older, I understand them. And now I am a teacher myself. I will also ask my students to do homework after class. So I can say:

Zhìyì lǎoshī, lǐjiě lǎoshī, chéngwéi lǎoshī.

质疑老师，理解老师，成为老师。
